Having had this very discussion recently, evidently 1) the 6-sp has been dropped in the States, but remains available elsewhere, 2) there were some issues with notchy 6-sp shifting that Saab has had one or more service campaigns on and 3) the 5-sp gets somewhat better 0-60 and 1/4 mile times due to its different shift points. Folks I've talked with who drove both preferred the 5-sp.
Regardless, I think loafing along on the highway in low rpms is a good thing, so long as the engine has adequate torque (sounds like a saab to me).
Because the 9^3SS has a completely different engine than the 9^5, I suspect the transmission must be significantly different as well, and not available for the line.
Me, I'd be happy to get that extra fifth gear in my 4-sp autobox :-)
