Yes I know exactly what you mean and it is always a sticky problem how to save the most amount of money for the customer but still make it worthwile for yourself to take on the job.
I try to keep the tear down cost as low as possible so that the customer doesn't get a too much of a double whammy if the engine is not salvageable.
To rip the heads off of a V6, assess the damage, do a leak down test of each cylinder/pistons and write up an estimate takes about 4 hours ($240.00 my cost) and this is time that is waisted if the engine needs to come out anyway.
If the customer decides to take it somewhere else I won't put anything back together for that price but just give them all the parts in a box.
