Assuming you used a floor jack with block of wood under the oil pan when you removed the yoke. Sometimes the jack will drift down, and the tension you feel while tightening the bolts is actually the effort required to lift the engine!
If the bolts aren't cross threaded, the only other reason I can think of for the difficulty tightening bolts would be if the jack (and engine) drifted downward during the belt change.
