I don't know that this is unusual today...

Things like heated seats seem to be options in plenty of cars. With Saab it seems strange for it to be an option, since it was standard on base models over 20 years ago. But times change. I know people who have it in their car (various makes) who don't like heated seats, and I live in NH where we definitely get winter. And people I know with heated seats in warmer climates don't use them, so I can see why it is an option.
Not everyone who has a wagon wants or needs a roof rack, so it makes sense to have that be an option. As for the fuel filler door, I don't understand why this is thought of as a premium feature. The gas flap on my '96 9000 CSE opens manually and that car has much of the "premuim content" of a 9-5 Arc. Why does having a remote filler door flap make a car more luxurious or better?
