"Old metal" ain't too bad....Saab still a Saab...... Posted by Mike Lynch [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: 9-5 Losing it's Premium Auto Status?, Bob T in Ct, Sat, 21 May 2005 21:18:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
All the competitive cars are newer metal, fresher designs, with more attention paid to exterior and especially interior bling, but a Saab is still a Saab and a 9-5 is the greatest Saab of all time and continues to be a world class automobile.
Saab giveth and Saab taketh away. We've had a little decontenting, but some pretty serious improvements along the way in terms of horsepower and features. The navigation system that people have been waiting for is a gem, touchscreen ease of use and that low flying airplane projection, very, very cool. Saab are now availible with all the toys, park assist, xenons, nav, rain sensing wipers, and still come with features only found in far more expensive vehicles like vented seats. Who else has an Aero Academy. And you don't need the owners manual in a 9-5 to change the radio station!
God bless GM for continuing to give us the genuine Swedish product (for awhile anyway) and not changing it too much for the sake of change. I think the '06 MCE will be a hit, Mikey likes it!
For me the Jap cars aren't a consideration. A TL is nicer lately, but it's still just a Honda. Same with Infinity, just a fancy Nissan, or Audi for that matter. A Saab, like a BMW or Benz isn't a fancy anything, it's unique. I drive the new BMW 5 series all the time, nice car, money aside give me a 545, but try changing the radio station and the $20,000 extra for the 545 is too much for me and the Aero blows away the 525/530 for $15-20k less. $50k+ for an E320, same story.
A 9-5 is still a premium car to compete with the likes of the Germans for a lot less dough and more giddyup. And the silver lining is the reliability and durability, among the tops in the European segment. But it is "old metal" (although unique and contemporary in function) which is kinda' one of the reasons I like it, sorta' retro in a world that's changing far too fast.
And who makes a cooler SportWagon...........
