I'm guilty of the ...phile thing. I was completely happy with the factory system until I A/B'd it against a "proper" stereo with considerable soundstaging, detail, imaging and the like. I was grumpy for a week, but I've gotten over it :-)
I don't think the car has any way of knowing that another unit has been installed, because it won't be interfaced with the TWICE or DICE or whatever ICE the factory stereo talks to. Your experience with the head unit out matches mine, the SID works fine (as long as it's properly pixiled).
I didn't know about that steering wheel control gizmo. Very cool (although the website says it won't work with my '99). I wonder where you connect to the existing wiring? I had my steering wheel and airbag module off once to swap wheels, and was amazed how few wires the control buttons require.
Sounds like you're ready and willing to tackle this; I'll look forward to your progress reports!
