I hear you re speakers etc, but I'm trying to go low(ish) budget here and my focus is on functionality (sat radio, ipod/MP3) rather than audiophile stuff.
Re steering wheel controls, there is a device (see link) to enable your SW controls to work with a head unit that has an infrared remote. Basically a learning remote with wiring to connect to your steering wheel buttons. I checked the manufacturer's website and was amazed to find a wiring guide for the 9-5. Car stereo stuff is hard enough, but in a Saab it's really an uphill climb.
Re SID, I have pulled the factory head unit out and it still maintains the non-stereo functions (temp, MPG, etc) so I don't think that's a problem. Unless the SID is affected when you not only remove the factory HU, but *replace* it with something else. Seems unlikely, but you never know with Saab. Do you know whether this is the case?
