Sludge - is there a solution?

OK, I have been reading up a bit on the sludge problem. I have a 99 9-5, I bought it used, and I know it has not always had it's oil changes the way it should.
Today, the oil light came on as I was going down the off-ramp from the highway. I pulled over, tried to get a tow company but couldn't, tried teh car again, and the light was out. The oil is really bad (quite sludgy), and I notice that in the morning sometimes it makes a pretty distinct hissing/whining noise. It also has the telltale rattle sometimes, too.
Right now I refuse to even go near my local Saab dealer (too many really bad experiences with them), and I doubt it would be covered anyway. So, is there a possible fix before trashing the thing?
