According to what I remember about the DIC poll conducted on this website, less than half the respodents had ever replaced a DIC at all, so your mechanics estimate of 20-200k may be only because he doesn't have any data points beyond 200k.
Don't let the DIC gloomers, as I call 'em, get you down. The DIC issue has IMO been way overblown because it is an easily understood consistent issue with applicble Saab models that sticks out because the whole car is basically so reliable. Saab has modified the software in the 9-5s to prolong DIC life and to allow for more gradual failure.
The biggest slice of the chance pie is that you'll never have a DIC failure, regardless of miles driven. Put that spare DIC next to the extra can of gas, oil, coolant, fuses, batteries, jumper cables and the years supply of food and water, just in case.
