Tom,
Probably the hardest job is extricating the turbo from the car and then reinstalling it. I followed other postings on SaabNet and instructions from a Mitchell repair manual for my 9-5. This was before I got a copy of the WIS CD. The oil line and cooling piping that converges at the turbo bearing location makes for some interesting human hand gouging!! Actually, I started out taking the turbo to a local rebuilder but didn't like his price after he had started to disassemble it. As such I had the advantage of some hot tank cleaning of the casting, but I did more cleaning to dissolve the coked oil remains. I had to do a bit of searching but finally located a California shop that put together the necessary rebuild kit ($100.00), although they first sent an incorrectly sized bushing. One of the owners actually worked for Garrett Air Research (manufacturer of my Garrett GT17 turbo) before. Nonetheless, I first had to get an exploded parts diagram of the unit that I just happened to find on the website of the Spanish distributor for Garrett turbos. I don't recall needing any specialty tools, other than a cheap set of calipers to verify the dimensions of the bushing. The actual worn parts replacement is easy and I do have some photos of the job I think I can put together. If you've been through 7 Saabs and done your own work you certainly have the mechanical sense and experience to do the turbo. Give me an e-mail address and I'll see if I can get the photos and parts supplier's name sent to you.
See Ya,
Kirk D.
