All cars have a 17 digit ID # called a VIN, vehicle identification number (so a VIN # is kinda' redundant) in various place on the car. In the US it's the drivers corner of the windshield, in the doorjamb, on the firewall and a couple of other places.
The VIN tells quite a story, country of manufacture, model year, often engine, transmission and assembly plant options. For internal use we need only the last 8 digits, the 10th thru the 17th digit. The 10th digit identifies the year of the car.
A VIN cannot be made up. The last digits of a VIN predict a preceeding field, digits 6-9, by secret mathmatical formula so you can just make a VIN up, the computer that knows the sequence, all automobile software, will validate every VIN.
