There's a little tool available at any auto parts store. It's used to both measure the gap, and to make it bigger or smaller depending on what you need. The gap does not have anything to do with the torquing of the plugs.
I've only done plugs on my old Saturn and my 9-5. In both cases, they were already within the recommended range. I don't know if this is typical, or if I was just lucky.
A tiny, tiny bit of anti-sieze on the threads of the new plugs is a good idea. Once the screws holding it down are out, the DIC pulls right off. Just pull the whole thing straight up. When I did mine a few weeks ago, I couldn't figure out how to disconnect the wiring on the DIC's right side, but there was still enough room to move it off to the side to get to the plugs.
This is another one of those super easy DIY jobs (brakes being the other) that are great money savers. Good luck!
