Possible DIC Failure?

Hello. My '00 9.5 (54K mi.) has been having intermittant starting problems. When it fails to start it behaves like there is no spark. Cranks and cranks but never tries to catch, no cough, no sputter, etc. Multiple attempts to start continue to fail. Then, with no apparent pattern or modification, the car will start and run fine. Several days of normal operation will follow and then the symptoms will repeat. Car will fail to start and after sitting for a bit, sometimes minutes sometimes overnight, it starts up and runs fine. On a few occasions the car will stall while driving but then start up again and act fine. Obviously with the intermittant nature of this my mechanic has not witnessed the failure. I have replaced the battery since I was still on the original but that has only allowed me to crank it longer when it won't start, it has not helped the starting problem. Here in Northern California humidity and weather conditions are pretty constant at this time of year so I doubt that is a factor.

I have read much of the discussions around the DIC here but have not found symptopms that match mine. Is it possible for the DIC to work at times and not work at others? Is there any way to test the DIC? How can you check if you are getting a spark when the coils sit atop the plugs and the HV connection point is not accessable? I would be happy to repalce the DIC as it sounds simple to do, but would like some collective wisdom prior to doing so.
