Well, if the engine is tuned for a lower octane you can actually damage the engine (in the long run) by running a significantly higher octane.
The engine is tuned to an octane rating for a reason. If you run an octane rating higher than it's tuned for you will get unburned gas in the cylinders causing carbon buildup. Basically, it's bad.
If the manual says run 87 run 87. You'll thank the manual in the years to come....
