i'm in the middle of replacing the turbo (same model - GT17) on my '00 9-3 w/ 53K mi.. fortunately it gave me some warning (blue smoke on cold start and oil in throttle body)...

will give verdict on turbo rebuilder in a week or so (cost is aobut $345)...

assuming you get the work done, make sure the exhaust manifold is checked to see if warped...had a broken exhaust stud (behind the ps pump naturally) -- need to mill about .030 to get everything flat...

there is a couple of design problems with the turbo installation -- the main issue is oil feed line wraps around (less than 0.25 inch) the exhaust side of the turbine, so the oil is getting preheated (a lot) in normal operation -- and once the the engine is shut down the heat soak is going to really cook the oil in the line and likely break it down (especially if its a semi-synthetic) which will eventually block the line and starve the turbo...

the exhaust manifold to turbo gasket protrudes into the exhaust passage... this is like have a glow plug in the exhaust and will make the turbo run hotter -- both the factory gasket and the replacement have the problem
