With that age, the prime suspect would be TB fouling that is interfering with the throttle plate movement that occurs to maintain idle speed. Yes, a vacuum leak can be a problem, but with what you describe it seems to be torque dependent, which would imply that the engine movement is playing with a cracked or split hose. That is possible, but at this age, all of the VAC lines are probably due for an inspection in any case.
Worn or fouled plugs can create some idle and near idle instabilities. Ditto for fouled injectors.
So check TB, plugs, use Techron Concentrate and check VAC lines.
Your drive belt seems to be slipping. Check for oil fouling or signs of wear. If belt is old but not high miles, it might just be aging and loosing its grip. Other things can create high belt loads and the PS might just be an incremental load. Sometimes, but rarely, the coolant pump creates high loads. Might be a good time to inspect the two idler pullies as well... not so easily done on the 9-5:(
