2001 Aero - Morning startup problem

My 2001 9-5 Aero has become difficult to start in the morning after being left outside all night. When the weather was hot, and there really wasn't much temperature drop overnight, and it always started on the first turn of the key.
Now, with a morning temp about 15 degrees colder - about 62 degrees or so - starting is erratic. First turn of the key: starter runs, engine doesn't catch. 2nd, 3rd, 4th attempts: engine catches immediately, stumbles, dies. 5th attempt: engine catches right away, runs smoothly, no hesitation. Rest of the day: starts immediately, runs normally.
Last week, the local dealer tried to fix this problem. The tech left the car out overnight, replicated my problem. No codes stored. Eventually replaced the crankshaft position sensor. This worked for a day, then back to the original behavior.
I'm going to give the car back to them next week for another try. It's a CPO vehicle, so the only hassle is really back-and-forth at $3.49 per gallon in their loaner 9-2x Aero.
Anyone experience this behavior? FWIW, the DIC & cat convertor on the Aero were replaced at about 26K, before I bought it. I now have about 32K on the car.
