If you're going to be getting it fixed at a body shop then I wouldn't sweat it too much about the check. Usually, you will get one for less of the final bill, but the shop and the responsible party's insurane company will work that out for supplemental payment. I've gotten rear ended a few times and that's the way it's always worked out. On my Aero, I was hit on the highway in stop & go traffic last year and her insurance co. (Allstate) only cut me a check for $1750 at first which I thought was rediculously low considering she curled the pan in the trunk under the spare tire. Remarkably, the body shop fixed it for that exact amount. I went and inspected the car and found a lot of items were not addressed. Made the owner and manage of the body shop sign something saying that I am not accepting the car approved and that they didn't complete the work...and listed all the other items that needed to be done.

Brought it somewhere else and said and done it totalled up to $4500 or so extra, which Allstate gladly paid out.

My point being, that was kind of an unusual case going through multiple body shops and such, but it wasn't a hassle getting it paid for.
