I also had a knocking from front suspension/steering on my 02 Aero. My UK dealer investigated for a year under warranty without finding a cause, then finally removed the entire front suspension assembly for checking. But on replacement the knocking came back. By then the dealer was reluctant to persue the problem but SAAB cut their losses on the warranty costs for this and a host of other issues with the car, and intervened to offer me a replacement (new) Aero for a fair upgrade price.
It was definitely a disappointing first year for me and my first SAAB, not least because it cost me to change the troublesome car after only a year. Must say though, that SAAB GB were fairer than I'd expected a manufacturer to be.
Needless to say, the cause of the steering/suspension knocking was never found. We might of course all be suffering from a different problem with similar symptoms, but I'd be as keen as anybody to know if any causes of knocking in this department have been isolated.
