Carolyn.....

The following represents a list of things you may want to consider in preparation for the winter.

1) Mount snow tires...on all 4 wheels...AND check inflation pressure.
2) Alternatively....use your all season tires...AND rotate them so the ones with the most tread are in the front. Check inflation pressure.
3) Check and replace antifreeze if your maintenance schedule requires. Pink antifreeze is good for life. The green stuff should be replaced every two years.
4) Make sure that the windshield wiper fluid is filled up (blue in color). Carry an extra gallon.
5) Have a load test run on the battery, and check water level (use distilled water to top off). 4-6 years is generally the life of a battery. Weak batteries are prone to let you down at low temperatures.
6) Is your temperature gauge starting to read low, or does the car take a long time to heat up? If yes, replace the thermostat. These symptoms get worse as the temperatures drop...a cold car, poor running, and bad gas mileage are the price of a bad thermostat.
7) Obviously, insure that scheduled maintenance is up-to-date.
8) If you have missing windows, you might want to fix this before it gets really cold.
9) Replace windshield wipers, unless relatively new. You'll be using them a lot more with snow, slush, etc. on the roads.
10) Get in the habit of carrying a charged-up cell phone. And, important tel. nos. (AAA, someone who'll come out to get you).
11) Depending on where you live and the nature of your driving, carry a down coat, Russian style lamb skin hat, and gloves in the back seat. I was so attired when a serpentine belt pulley went at -6 degrees. I waited 45 minutes before AAA showed up; the clothing made it all a non-event. A car cools off quickly at -6 degrees. And yes, the charged cell phone and AAA tel. no. did help.
12) Carry a snow shovel in the trunk.
13) Carry 2 ice scrapers. They break easily when very cold....especially if they're the light cheap variety.
14) If you live in a very rural area and you're going out in the snow on a lightly traveled route....let people know what you're up to. This approach is de rigueur for hikers.
15) Check all lights for alignment and operation.

That's just a few things that come to mind. Others may add to the list. You may tailor to suit your situation.

Good Luck,

Herb Hisch
