Have you had the ignition cassette (IDM) go bad on the car while under warranty? And was it a long time ago?
I think we are going to see more now when the cars are out of warranty that suddenly, it needs a software update that has been out for a couple of years now. Now they can charge the customer for it whereas when the car was under warranty, Saab had to pay.
The latest software that I'm aware of doesn't say anything specific for that code or catalytic converter but it does contain a fix to help prolong the life of the ignition cassette and that software should be loaded together with when the IDM is replaced, if it was replaced in the last 2 years.
It might be that you had an IDM malfunction that gave the catalytic converter a knock out and lowered the performance enough to trigger the code now and then (maybe together with bad batch of gasolin) but didn't damage it enough to make the code come on for good.
After what I understand, the catalytic converter is under Federal warranty for 8 years/80K miles but it can sometimes be difficult to cinvince them of that.
$100.00 at a dealer is reasonable for a software download.
