Yup. Orange relay. Resoldering Usually Fixes It

My 1999 SE V-6 had the exact same symptoms. An earlier post advising to tap or twist the orange "relay" quickly confirmed that was the culprit. The light came back on as soon as i gave the relay a rap.
Instead of $100+ bucks to replace it, if you are at all inclined to use small soldering iron... you can pop off the orange cover with a couple small screwdrivers applied on opposite sides between the black base and the bottom of the orange cover. Once open, you'll see that a small vertical printed circuit board is connected via soldered pads along the bottom to the pins of the relay. While these may look okay, a microscopic vibration induced fracture develops at one of these solder joints that sometimes makes contact and of course does not at others. Simply resoldering these with a little bit of extra solder fixes the problem.
