The shop might have gotten the outer caliper spring incorrectly installed.
I have seen that before where they didn't tuck the spring in under two tabs of the caliper and that will tilt the caliper until it have worn the pads sideways to make full contact on the rotor.
With this installation mishap it will push the caliper piston to far back into the caliper and at each and every brake attempt, you will have to take up the slack that is created, giving you a soft/long travel pedal feel.
Also, if you have an early 99 9-5 (VIN -->X202000/X702000), they might have used pads for a newer 9-5 without removing a hump on the back of one pad and that would create about the same scenario with a tilted caliper.
