Urgent ! Automatic transmission into neutral mode ?

I was driving home last night and it snowed kinda bad :) It is Syracuse. I stoped on the red light and tried to accelerate, however the car was staying still. For a second I thought my wheels don't have the traction cause the road is covered with snow, but now I am confident that it is a tranny problem. I am able to shift to any gear, rev up the engine but the car does not drive. After I shut the car off and turned it back on I could drive it for about 1/2 mile and the problem repeated. Now regardless of which mode your are in ( D, R, 1, 2, 3) the car stands still (just like a slipping clutch on the manual. I don't have much experience with auto transmissions... Any suggestions ? Can I replace the fluid because it looks really dark ? Will it help? Is my transmission dead ? I had a check gearbox light come on about 2,000 miles ago, but I reseted it with OBD II tool. One of the mechanics told me that I should not try to change the fluid as it might damage the tranny permanently in case it is not completely shot...
I have a 99 9-5 4cyl LPT with AERO ECU, automatic, 83K miles on it.
Thanks
