The type of use the car has seen can influence the formation of sludge. Short trips where the car never fully warms up are much more likely to cause a problem than long trips.
If you have a specific car you are looking at, have the valve cover removed and look for signs of sludge.
IMHO, if it looks clean there you can minimize the possibility of sludge with good maintenance, like 5,000 mile synthetic oil changes and periodic PCV maintenance.
If there are signs of sludge under the valve cover, find another candidate, since Saab is doing its best to find any and every reason to avoid paying for repairs on any car that has not had the overpriced oil changes done at Saab dealers.
