Your DIC replacement should have been a freebie, since Saab has sent letters out to owners of your vintage car informing them that a recall is coming when parts are available for the DIC this Spring. I don't think the ambient temperature at the time of DIC failure makes much difference. If you are on the highway and the engine shuts down, you get unburned fuel in the exhaust until you get the car stopped. It doesn't take much fuel when the converter is at operating temperature to cause a meltdown. It doesn't sound like your dealer has much on the ball if he didn't check things out or tell you about the pending recall on the DIC. If it was a genuine saab dealer you should beable to get reimbursed fot the DIC and a new converter if that turns out to be the problem. Saab USA should be able to help if you get stonewalled at the dealer.
