Touch wood mine are still fine but it is not at all uncommon for these to fail on any car. They are not springs but gas charged struts, the extremely high gas pressure gives you the restraining force... when a small leak develops the gas pressure goes way down and you've got no 'spring' left. If they are not leaking oil then they can usually be 'recharged' and will most likely go for another 5 years (happened with my Alfa). Once they leak oil they're buggered, but they're pretty cheap anyhow.
What is neat in the Saab is where the hell the things are... must be tucked into the roof somewhere because they are not in the tradional position you expect to see them- ugly things hanging off the sides of the tailgate. A very neat install but maybe a bit hard to get at, but I'm sure with a few trims removed it will soon be obvious.
Cheers
