I just happened to find a used 1999 9-5 in my DC area through SaabNet ad and had not considered the model before then. I'd had a 1985 900 turbo and a 1993 900 (non-turbo+automatic = tractor!!) and the 9-5 looked great size wise and the styling, interior, ride, etc. sold me. Nonetheless, I read SaabNet postings and Consumer Reports thoroughly and knew what to expect from the 9-5 1998/1999 introduction years. Mine was bought from the original owner who brought it new from Germany over to the States and kept scrupulous maintenance records throughout its' 3 year 60,000 mile warranty period. Luckily for me, the solder defect problem in the ECU was fixed under warranty. I've rebuilt the turbo, replaced a DIC, swapped out the suspension for a 2001 Aero package, replaced the Lucas SID and ACC panels that had display pixel problems and generally done these and vrtually all maintenance work myself. A pesky oil leak was not from a porly torqued cylinder head, but a failing oil pressure sending unit. I change the Mobil 1 oil and the filter regularly and have seen no sludge at a 126,000 miles so far. This SaabNet site helps me troubleshoot most any problem, so I believe I'm gladly keeping this car for a few more years!!!
