Traction Control v. Limited Slip Differential

My 1999 9-5 with manual transmission doesn't have traction control. I have always thought of traction control as a software approach to implementing a limited slip differential. I still think the limited slip differential is probably more effective, since some high-performance cars tend to have that along with traction control. But by doing it in software, the car manufacturer just loads the software into the computer and doesn't have to add the price of the limited slip differential to the cost of the car.
Given that it is not possible to implement traction control on a 1999 9-5, would anyone know if it is possible to put a limited-slip differential on my 9-5 and what an estimated cost might be? It would be nice to have in the snow. Once after parking facing uphill in a friend's sloping driveway without realizing I had one front wheel on ice and the other on perfectly dry pavement, I had trouble getting the car moving. The "ice" wheel was spinning along while the "dry" wheel was stationary. Not a great feeling in an expensive car. That incident prompted me to try snow tires the following winter, and I haven't had any similar situations since then. But I have always wondered if I could at least put the limited slip differential in so that I could get some sort of traction control without having to trade this car in.
I would appreciate hearing any thoughts on this.
