Hi Steve,
You wrote:
"I still think the limited slip differential is probably more effective..." Correct!
"But by doing it in software, the car manufacturer just loads the software into the computer and doesn't have to add the price of the limited slip differential to the cost of the car." Correct again!
The basic difference is that:
- Traction control brakes a spinning wheel - self-defeating if you're trying to get going.
- LSD shifts torque from the spinning wheel to the wheel that does have traction thus improving one's ability to move in slippery conditions.
Since the 9-5 is not available with AWD, FWD with a LSD would be a cost-effective combination that will yield better traction than FWD alone without the MPG penalty of AWD! (I wonder if Saab is listening?)
However, SAAB doesn't offer LSD even as an option. The aftermarket Quaife LSD is only available for the manual 9-5. So you're in luck. However, the cost to retrofit your 9-5 with it is not a small matter. The LSD has to be installed inside the transmission. It would be much more cost effective to add a LSD when the car is being assembled or if you ever need to have your MT serviced/rebuilt. Has your MT been reliable to date? (Just curious - Some have suggested that the Japan-built AT is more reliable than the MT)
