Copper does not work harden - that's why they use it for electric wires that are meant to bend and bend and bend. You needn't heat treat your used washer to restore it's malleablility.
What does happen is after repeated use, the washer gets thinner and larger diameter. Every time you tighten the plug, it squeezes out some, and if you tighten beyond the spec, it squeezes out more. Me, I replace them when they seem visibly larger (OD) than the new ones I keep in the basement. The dealer tech replaces them every time, so for the first 3 years/30,000 miles I got a new one for every second oil change...
