John,
Not too long ago, I had to make the same decision you are looking at. I had sold my SUV, and I wanted a fuel-efficient, fun-to-drive car. I had narrowed my choices down to a 9-5 and an accord. My father has had 5 Saab's, and (up until thhe 2006 model) would never even consider anything else.
I drove the accord, then I drove the 9-5. There is NO comparison! The 9-5 is not an "issue-free" car, but what car is? Accords are great, but to get a good deal on a used one, it'll have 125K miles or so on it. Not the case with a Saab. Since they are a little strange, they are not the mass-market high resale value machines like the accord....but they are so much more comnfortable and more fun to drive.

If you find a good 9-5, have it checked out by an independant Saab repair shop, and get a copy of the service records. The 9-5 is an AMAZING car that is also VERY safe. Performance & handling wise, it will blow away the accord! I recently took a 300 mile (each way) road trip and got 31MPG at 80MPH (just under 3K RPM's). Even at 80, there is still plenty of power on-tap for 100+ with ease.

The accord will probably be more reliable, but not even close in the fun factor. Plus, everybody and their brother has an accord....boring.

Just my opinion....
