I feel safer because I consider the risk of me having a medical emergency while driving to be fairly low (at least, a medical emergency that prevents me from unlocking the doors and yet, somehow, summoning an EMT.)
On the other hand, I consider the risk higher of someone coming up to my car and trying to open the door while I wait at an intersection. It's happened to me once or twice. It's also happened to me that homeless beggars walk up to the my car door and panhandle...while they are not attempting to open the car door, I feel vulnerable seated, belted-in, while they are standing up and I'm not sure what their intentions are.
I don't think I've seen an American car built in the last ten years (with power locks) that do not automatically lock the doors. Japanese vehilcles go back and forth, and European ones seem to autolock nearly universally.
I was doing the internet research, and the general consensus seems to be that autolocking is preferred to reduce risk of carjacking. I only saw a few comments/advice like yours.
