preference for auto locks

I consider auto locks a godsend. The area I live in and drive in most of the time is "questionable." The second I hear the locks engage with their satisfying clunk I feel safer.
It's true that I could lock the door myself (and if I'm sitting in my car for a bit before driving off, I will) but the advantage of auto lock is that I don't have to worry about locking *or* unlocking the car when I'm at the end of my trip.
Assuming there's a medical emergency that was the result of an accident, the Saab will unlock automatically. Having said that, I always read that while locking doesn't add strength to the latch, it makes it less likely that the door will accidentally open during an accident. (At least, I read that in Mercedes-Benz literature.) I'm not sure on the physics of that, but I presumed it was a widely known and unquestioned concept.
I also presumed that the autolock was set by default from factory. (At least on the 2002+ 9-5.)
