Merc? You must be on the other continent :-)
'02 9-5 got some upgrades, I'd hold out for '02 or newer, although previous ones are good cars too.
Standard used car things to watch out for - documented service, primarily so you KNOW the car was well cared for & secondarily so it will qualify for the updated 8 year unlimited mileage warrantee against sludge.
I know you'd love a nice low mileage car, but it is appearing (to me) that the high mileage cars with lots of highway driving are actually healthier engine wise. I am sure some will say the low mileage local cars are easier to rectify the previous owners sins, which has some truth. Also the high mileage cars are really cheap to buy. New an Aero was $42,000 USD, now I'm seeing them at 100,000 miles selling at just over $10,000 USD. That's cheaper than a new Accord, Camry, or Corolla. The Saabs don't hold value like a Mercedes, but buying used that is a benefit to you.
Does any given car have all service campaigns current? I know there is some problems with DI cassettes - there is a recall starting in March, there seems to be a frequency to use up the turbos, & the SID's tend to go wonky.
I too am a fan of the Mercede's, but they seem to be pretty hit or miss on quality control from what I hear. Saab has been making constant improvements over the last (decade?). I'm not sure you could get help with a Mercedes on line other than 'my dealer replaced...' With a Saab you have us folks on TSN! Does MB have owners conventions?
Show your wife the Folksam survey & other insurance real world crash results - the Saabs are VERY high up on the list of protecting occupants. The MB -might- be more rebuildable after a sever accident, but do you really want your rebuilt car back after a severe accident?
