Well from what I have heard lately your are correct about the Merc reliability, it isn't what it used to be. I do believe Saabs rate higher, at least in the U.S. As to the overpowered, I have a 2000 Aero sedan and do not find it overpowered though 230 BHP is a lot to put through the front tires. As to George's comments about the 2002 model, the Aero get upgraded suspension, a new 5 speed auto box (not a major consideration outside North America) and an increase to 250 BHP. There were many other changes including a aluminum tone dash which many don't like. I however find my 2000 just fine, might notice the difference if I drove one of the later cars but I haven't so far. It is quick, fun and I enjoy the handling.
Also as noted, the safety is excellent and with kids this could be your best selling point to get your wife into one.
Brooks,
