It's all cool......No reason to reject any year... There's no bad year or bad car in the group. The 2002's and up have some mid-cycle enhancement stuff, but that doesn't obsolete the 2000-2001s. I'm very happy with my 2000 9-5 Aero SportWagon and I drive the new ones all the time.
Is your wife and Aero kinda' gal? Or maybe you can talk her into an Aero. Even if she's not an Aero gal and you get the Aero for you and she drives it, an Aero won't be too harsh or too stiff riding for her. She might have some small issues with the low front spoiler. If it's an Aero, then the 2002+ did get the nice sport seats.
If it's not an Aero than the need for a 2002+ becomes less compelling. The 2002+ non-Aero Linears and Arcs had some strange color wood dashes whereas the 2000-2001 SportWagons are all the gorgeous dark burled walnut, including the Aeros. That's a negative about the 2002+ Aeros, the aluminum look dash.
V6 vs turbo 4, you could like either. The 2002-2003 V6 Arcs have a high level of standard equipment including the vented (air conditioned) seats.
2004 Arcs went back to the 4 cyl turbo, but now with 220hp, pretty close to an Aero. Also the premium package became a stand alone option again. And 2004 was the Linear SportWagon. No premium package availible, and even some non sunroof cars in the 2004-2005 Linear wagons, but a nice car anyway.
That'd be one thing I'd look for in a non-Aero and non-V6, a premium package, which includes the memory seats, auto-dim inside mirror and Harmon Kardon sound. Again not that I'd reject a non premium car at the right price and color, just something to notice and standard on all V6's and Aeros.
I heartily agree, go CPO if you can.
