Now I have my own DIC story, oy!

It happened to me, finally. I guess it was a matter of time.
I own a 2000 9-5 SE V6 wagon, and it started misbehaving yesterday after warming up. It would stutter on the highway, idle roughly at idle, and generally misbehave. Took it to an indy in Atlanta who confirmed that it's one of my 2 DICs beginning to go bad. The check engine light did not go off, and fault codes weren't being output, but he knew that it was a failing DIC.
Called Saab customer support, who said a dealer must diagnose the issue, not an indy.
Call the dealer who's happy to help, but admitted without a fault code, there isn't anything they can do for me. They explained they're replacing DICs in advance of the March/April recall and will only be reimbursed with a fault code.
I had to laugh. I have a good mechanic telling me what the problem is, yet Saab will only fix it if I'm stranded on the highway, with a fault code telling them it doesn't work? What kind of sense does that make?
This whole DIC thing is really making me think it's time for a Japanese car. Any advice, anyone?
Thanks,
Eric
