Jason, can you supply further information on how the trouble was traced to the neutral position switch?

My 2000 9-5 wagon is showing the identical symptom. I've got a call in to Saab Customer Service, who is willing to assist my local dealer to diagnose the problem, but there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to troubleshoot this thing. (Because the problem arises BEFORE the car starts, the on-board diagnostic system evidently isn't "awake" yet, therefore no codes are set that the technicians can read.

As I've noticed on other posts, customers and technicians both have wasted a lot of time trying all kinds of things to get to the bottom of this, only to have the car start just fine every time they turn the key! The classic "intermittent problem" that is oh so real and frustrating!

I would be grateful to hear what light you can shed on this, to help my dealer verify that I've got a bad switch, or suggest a cheap fix. The replacement part is not cheap (almost $300), and I hear it takes 2 hours labor to install.
