I had a TS go like that, removed connector, checked sensor ohms - OK, put resistor across the connector and the gauge registered as expected, reconnected and it worked fine and has been good since. So it seems that the connectors are not 100% and removing and reseating might solve some of these problems.

To check the sensor ohms, it should be a few hundred ohms when hot and around 2K ohms when cold. A resistor in that range can be used to get the gauge to show a reading. But if the TS in in range, that should also make the gauge show a reading.

I had a similar problem with a low oil pressure sensor not showing at lamp check. Tried to get at the connector and did not succeed with a minimal effort approach (is is buried behind the starter), but having disturbed the connector (but did not get it disconnected), it then worked again.
