That's a small sample size (one Camry). Every car maker, even Toyota, has problems. But when you consider Toyota's total production volume, the story changes. We've owned three Land Cruisers, a Camry, and a Lexus. Zero problems in any of them, with a combined mileage of probably half a million miles.

I love my SAAB. It's our second 9-5 Aero (the first being a 2000). We considered lots of other vehicles, 5 Series, G35, GS, etc. But for us, it came down to a few things:
1.) performance
2.) availability of a manual trans
3.) fuel economy
4.) safety
5.) reliability relative to other European makes (since there wasn't a Japanese sedan that fit the above criteria for us - TL came close, but couldn't find a 6-speed around here, and dealers weren't dealing anyway, since they sold every TL that came in - which also speaks to the uniqueness value of the SAAB)
6.) we REALLY loved our old Aero, and it made sense as a backup baby-carrier to my wife's 2004 Land Cruiser; plus, I could also have some fun with it on my morning commute

HOWEVER, all that said, Toyota does things like no other manufacturer. They are heavy into quality control and process, Six Sigma, etc. I once looked at the engineering spec for the straight six in our `94 Cruiser, and it was supposed to go 300,000 km between engine jobs, of which all you really had to do was check valve clearances and change shims if needed. It was designed to last through three such jobs, or 1.2 million kilometers!!! People often ask me why we paid so much for these trucks, that are smaller and underpowered compared to their American equivalents. There are many reasons, the main one being they will last for as long as I live, with proper maintenance, whereas the Ford/Chevy/Dodge crap will croak somewhere around the first 100K.

I point out the engineering excellence, the locomotive-strength drivetrain components (crawl underneath one sometime - it's basically a one-ton truck), the little details like where the air is sourced (for water crossings) or the provision from the factory for both dual battery AND dual fuel tank setups, the cyclonic air cleaner with repository for all the Saharan sand that might get sucked in, the grease zerks on the driveshafts for maintenance in camp, the multiple locking differentials (at least, until MY2000), the fully boxed frame members for the entire length (no weak U-formed beams in these trucks), the thicker body sheet metal with multiple coats of rust-inhibitor before the paint is even applied, etc.

No matter what people say about Toyota lacking "soul" it cannot be denied that they build an excellent vehicle.

My $0.02,

Derek
