The right hub would not slide off the shaft because the splines were thoroughly siezed. I trashed one puller and couldn't get it to budge with a new larger puller. The new puller claims it can apply 14,000 pounds of force, and I was reefing on it pretty hard, but the hub wouldn't budge.
In the end I pulled the entire driveshaft assembly out. This required bending out the flange on the inner driver to allow the tripod bearing to come out. The machine shop was able to get the shaft out of the hub, but the tech commented that it was a real bear (and charged me accordingly).
I couldn't tell for sure, but it looked like the splines on the shaft were coated with some type of gunk that acted like locktite, rather than an antisieze compound. I scraped it off before reassembly and coated everything with antisieze compound.
By the way, the bearings cannot be lubricated. Disassembly trashes them.
I tend to agree that the old style packed bearings generally last much longer, and if they do go bad, are very simple and cheap to replace.
