Keep in mind this is obviously a non scientific and VERY rough estimate.
The police radar speed displays usually show my speed about 5-7 mph lower than what my speedomoter reads. Also, when I've gotten tickets, they always tell me about 5-10 mph lower than what I thought I was going. Now, like I said before this is obviously non scientific, and hardly accurate.

However, there was an article in Car and Driver regarding the accuracy of the speedometer in European cars about 3-4 years ago. As I recall, European standards say that under NO circumstance can the displayed speed be LOWER than the actual speed. That means, folks who trick out their cars with rims, lower profile tires etc must still see a speed at or higher than what they are actually going. A stock BMW 540i was actually off as high as 14-15mph at one point in the test! I'll look up the article some other time, but if any one else can comment, that would be great.
