Suspected impending turbo failure

Think my turbo is on its way out. Symptoms are (fairly classic), smoky start up (most of the time), whine or whistle as the turbo comes on charge under acceleration, puff of smoke as you change gear under hard acceleration.
The car is a 2000 UK spec 2.0l lpt turbo (150 bhp) with 72k miles.
My previous turbo Saab was a NG900 Talledega Turbo (great car, sold it to a friend with 150k miles on the clock, 3 years ago, perfect then and still going strong)
I have the chnce of a new garret turbo on Ebay, described as suitable for a 9-5 and the following text is cut-and-pasted from the ad:
"The part numbers for this item are - 452204-0001 OR 3 OR 4 OR 5 and Saab part number 9172123 or 5955703 or 5955704."
How do I check the part number on this item, and should I stop driving it until I get a new turbo.
Thanks
Laurie
