When the 5 speed autos first became standard in 2002 across the 9-5 line I still sold quite a few 2001s after back to back test drives with a 2002. The difference is very subtle and most would be hard pressed to tell the difference unless you tip them off. I drive the 5 speed autos all the time and I'm quite happy with my 2000's 4 speed auto.
The 5 speed auto has a better midrange as 3rd gear on the 5 speed bridges the gap between 2nd and 3rd on the 4 speed.
