The full synthetic should help. If not on full or semi synthetic before, use shorter drain intervals for a while as there may be some deposits loosened up.
With 160,000 miles, I suggest that you use Mobile 1 Truck and SUV 5W40. Its thicker body will be more appropriate for your engine's increase clearances. You may also notice that the engine runs smoother and quieter.
I do not know why the V6 turbos fail. I am suspicious that if they are going to go, driving style is not a factor.
Do you know when the coolant was last changed?
You also need to know when the timing belt was last changed and perhaps if/when the timing belt idler was last changed and what partnumbers were used. There were some issues and idler improvements, but I cannot remember if that was the NG900's only or also the 9-5s.
