Yes, I have seen a similar thing happen on my MY05 SW Arc 2.3T, when I forgot I was in M mode. I didn't reach the cut out, but the engine did reve to 5500 or more, before I got off the gas, and shifted into second gear.
On the way down however, I find that it will shift me into lower gear, like first, when I really want to be in second (coasting up to a light about to turn green, for example), so you do have to pay attention - you could rev pretty high if you thought you were in third, but actually were in second.
