I just replaced my factory original 1999 2.3 lpt exhaust from the catalytic converter back with a Remus system which eliminates the center resonator. I was tempted several times to just replace the rear "looks like a beat up rusted suitcase" section, but kept patching it for 3 years until I saw the Remus sytem was fast disappearing from remaining suppliers stock. When I took out the old muffler, the center section only appeared to have just the beginning of an external corrosion spot, but I agree with another poster that the internals may well have been shot. I used to hear some strange rattling noise under the car when accelerating at low speed in too high a gear. My guess is the corroded baffles inside the center resonator. No such noise now with tge great Saab/Remus sport exhaust replacement. Certainly not loud as some others think, and despite the fact that is is being discontinued and the lifetime warranty will likely not be honored, I'm sure it will long outlast any OEM part. Get one if you can still find it for $400 or a little less. Best of luck.
