Endemic ABS / TCS sensor problem?

Hi,
Yesterday my wife was driving our 2000 SAAB 9-5 Wagon SE/V6 with 53,000 miles on it when the dash lit up with "TCS Off", ABS, Brake! and the ding dong sound. The car continued to run fine, and the speedometer is working.
Initially I hoped that it was just a low battery. I charged the battery, as it was very low. But this morning with a fully charged battery, all of the lights on the dash are still on.
After reading a lot of posts on this BB, it seems that it might be the dreaded ABS sensor needing replacement, a $3000.00 job if I go to my dealer. Thankfully, there seems to be a lot of great DIY advice for getting mine rebuilt.
However, before I go that route, is there any way I can verify myself that it is indeed the sensor? Or are there any steps I can take to diagnose the problem? Can I go to the local Auto Zone, but one of those $89.99 "OBDC II code readers" (I think that's what they're called) hook it up and have it spit out an error code? Maybe check for loose connections somewhere? Whip out my trusty multimeter and check voltage or whatever?
Many, many thanks!
Tony
