Well, my optimism was short lived. After driving for a few minutes, the lights all came on, the "ding-dong" chimed, and then the speedometer went dead to boot. The problem does seem to be intermittent; on start-up a few times the lights have gone off normally, only to come on after a few minutes.

Thus a few questions...

1. Does any one have any advice on further diagnosis of the problem?

2. Any Electrical Engineers, familiar with microcontrollers, out there know if fixing the sensor is a DIY job? I've got my old soldering iron from my Heathkit days at the ready (said more than half jokingly). Actually, that doesn't sound like a viable route, but at least yanking the unit and getting it rebuilt does sound like a reasonable option.

3. If I go to the junkyard looking for a replacement, does anyone know if other cars share this same piece of wizardry, giving me a better shot of finding a used one?

4. We're the original owners, and we have had most of our work done at the SAAB dealer. The car is no longer under warranty. Is there really a chance that SAAB might do this $3,000 job for free (or charge me only for labor). I do plan on calling SAAB North America tomorrow, but I'm not really sure if they'll listen to my case.

5. To whom can I complain? It seems that SAAB should issue a recall for this. How can I get my voice heard, or how can we make our voices heard so that SAAB takes our concerns seriously (I mean $3,000 for a part is pretty outrageous)?

Many thanks to all,
Tony
